Scriptwriters workshop in Yorkshire 2013.

This is a post from script Yorkshire which explains upcoming scriptwriting workshops for anyone who wants to learn the art and craft of scriptwriting and how to sell scripts. I will be attending these sessions to improve my scriptwriting craft which will help with my assignment of creating a script and pitching this script to a producer.

“NEW MARKETS FOR NEW WRITERS”
SlungLow are opening their quirky doors to Script Yorkshire.  So come along and meet them on Saturday 13th April down at their HUB space under the railway arches in Leeds … because what they have to say just might open more doors for you.
Artistic Director Alan Lane, along with SlungLow’s most recent hook-up Porl Cooper, HUB & General Manager (former Development Programmer for the Lowry Studio) are prepared to share with us some of their knowledge, expertise, practical tips & key contacts regarding what’s out there for Writers right now.
Alan Lane:   “I see a new emergence for writers.  The opportunies are currently out there.  If writers get the right contacts, make a slight creative shift in their thinking & perhaps go outside or beyond the script … if they’re prepared to work more collaboratively on projects too, then it’s a very exciting time for them.  And I do mean projects where the script really matters … that have story and character at their heart.”
SlungLow do not read scripts but are always open to ideas.  They have their finger on the current pulse & with Porl Cooper on board these are very exciting times for us Yorkshire folk.  Porl is bringing his award-winning magic across the Pennines and we welcome that! And with the SlungLow partnership it’s a very exciting prospect.
So come and meet Alan and Porl, listen to what they have to say and pick their brains.  These guys really know their stuff.  You’d be a fool not to!

INT. A PARTY - NIGHT
A party is in full swing.
We see through the eyes of a young woman; as she walks
through a large group of people to find her friends.
We find JAMES first; who smiles at us. Holding JAMES’ hand
is his girlfriend, ALICE; who throws us a forced; almost
sarcastic smile.

We battle our way through a few more strangers before
finding KATE. KATE smiles warmly; giving us a hug before
handing over a drink.
Then we are watching the young woman and KATE from afar;
talking and enjoying the party.
Kate hovers beside the young woman, puppy like, as the young
woman engages with the rest of the party.

EXT. BEACH - LATER
A full moon’s light dances along the calm inviting sea.
The reflection partially illuminates a young woman’s corpse;
laid face down; motionless; grains of sand on her cheek.
Quietly, the receding sea line gently laps her feet.

EXT. BEACH - THE FOLLOWING MORNING
The early sun’s glare washes over the young woman; still
unmoved but left alone by the now departed sea line.
Along the shore; two detectives pace in unison; scanning for
washed away evidence, a familiar rhythm driving them.
Detective COLE, a gentle but driven man, searches
methodically. In contrast; Detective SILVA; an abrupt and
distant woman; seems less interested in the crime scene.
COLE stops, staring out to sea; deep in thought. Finding the
DECEASED’S phone; COLE joins SILVA as they proceed to
discuss the case.
COLE hands over the phone. On the screen wallpaper are four
young friends. We recognise them as JAMES, ALICE, KATE and
the DECEASED.
SILVA nods approvingly as COLE points to the suspects in the
picture.
2.

Approaching the body, SILVA departs as COLE crouches;
craning to see the young woman’s face.

INT. INTERROGATION BENCH - LATER
A three section split screen; the three suspects; each one
sat on a bench, anxiously waiting.
In the first screen is KATE, who appears shaken and
vulnerable; her eyes darting around fretfully.
In the second is ALICE, who impatiently plays with her hair.
In the third is JAMES, who; reality dawning, leans forward.
Hearing a noise; KATE timidly walks out of view.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Anxiously, KATE looks up in fear.
Menacingly; COLE leans down; placing his hands on the desk;
uncomfortably close to KATE.
KATE begins to tell her version of events.
FLASHBACK TO:

INT. THE PARTY - THE PREVIOUS NIGHT
We are back the party from the opening scene.
We recognise the young girl; at this point still very much
alive; hopelessly attempting to spurn JAMES’ advances.
Nearby; KATE and ALICE are talking.
Finally she has enough. Pushing him violently; she storms
out of the room.
Returning to the bar defeated; JAMES orders two drinks from
the BARMAN. JAMES nods to a woman sat at the bar; whom in
the present day is still a MISSING SUSPECT.
Downing one drink; JAMES takes the second; going after the
DECEASED. The BARMAN and the MISSING SUSPECT exchange looks.

3.

EXT. THE BEACH - CONTINUOUS
THE DECEASED walks along the path; swaying a little.
JAMES follows her out; grabbing her arm. There is a
struggle. She slaps him hard in the face.
Surprised he recoils a little; before trying again.
Again she slaps him. Drunken and enraged, James strangles
her. Her limp body falls to the ground.
BACK TO PRESENT:

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM
COLE stands back digesting the information. He gestures to
KATE indicating that she is free to go.
Unburdened but exhausted; and dragging her feet, she leaves.

INT. INTERROGATION BENCH - CONTINUOUS
Split screen again; one empty screen and two suspects left.
the remaining two still anxiously waiting.
KATE shuffles into her screen; sitting down.
With a delayed reaction; JAMES looks up; before walking out
 of our view.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
JAMES is shown in.
Detective COLE pulls out a seat, instructing him to sit.
The detective then sits opposite him; his elbows resting on
his knees; a predator ready to strike. Grief stricken; JAMES
stares vacantly out of the window in anguish.
As the detective begins to question him, JAMES recounts his
version of events.
FLASHBACK TO:

4.

INT. THE PARTY - THE PREVIOUS NIGHT
A repeat of the exchange from the previous flashback. In
this version however, JAMES and THE DECEASED are laughing
and joking together.
He asks her if she wants another drink before heading for
the bar. Watching him walk away; she sends JAMES a text.
From afar, JAMES’ girlfriend ALICE has seen everything.
Next to her KATE instinctively tries to calm ALICE down.
At the bar with two drinks ordered; JAMES receives the text.
The message reads: "GONE TO GET SOME AIR"
Smiling to himself, JAMES downs a drink. Taking the other,
JAMES nods to THE MISSING SUSPECT as he turns to head back.
Returning; he discovers THE DECEASED arguing with ALICE. As
THE DECEASED flees in tears; ALICE follows her.
JAMES turns to the BARMAN; who shruggs sympathetically. THE
MISSING SUSPECT mirrors the response.
EXT. THE BEACH - CONTINUOUS
THE DECEASED runs out; stumbling a little as she slows
down.
ALICE catches her up; grabbing her violently. The two push
and pull until THE DECEASED falls to the ground.
As THE DECEASED tries to pick herself up, ALICE lunges.
Slamming THE DECEASED’S head on the ground; ALICE
subsequently climbs over; strangling her.
THE DECEASED tries to fight back; but to no avail.
BACK TO PRESENT:
INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM
Distracted, JAMES still gazes through the window. Gathering
himself he turns to see COLE stood at the door.
The detective opens the door dismissively. Taking his Que;
JAMES leaves while he still can.

5.
INT. INTERROGATION BENCH - CONTINUOUS
Split screen; the two girls wait.
Relieved JAMES returns to his screen; slumping as he sits.
As she is called; ALICE brushes down her clothes before
walking purposefully out of shot.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Detective COLE keeps the door held open; waiting for ALICE
to be shown in; then closing it behind her.
A little less confidently now; she takes a seat. As COLE
questions her; ALICE begins to tell her version of events.

FLASHBACK TO:
INT. THE PARTY - THE PREVIOUS NIGHT
At first this seems much like JAME’S version of events.
KATE and ALICE watch from afar.
JAMES and THE DECEASED seem to be flirting. THE DECEASED
glances over her shoulder; noticing the MISSING SUSPECT
looking strangely at her.
As before; JAMES goes to the bar; ordering two drinks and
talking briefly to the BARMAN and THE MISSING SUSPECT.
This time; as he turns back he notices THE DECEASED flirting
with another man.
Angry; JAMES downs one of the drinks. Without looking back
at the BARMAN he then slams the glass down on the bar.
Storming over; JAMES proceeds to argue with his rival.
Crying; THE DECEASED pulls away; withdrawing into the crowd.
Pushing through; JAMES follows her as she heads outside.
EXT. THE BEACH - CONTINUOUS
JAMES follows THE DECEASED out and along the beach.
As before he grabs her arm. She tries to resit; but dizzy;
she falls. He leans over; strangling her.

(CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 6.
In this version he is not drunk; and is driven by a calmer
rage. The murder this time is colder; more calculated.

BACK TO PRESENT:

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM
Ambivalently COLE gestures for ALICE TO leave.
Cautious and calculating; ALICE leaves.
As she walks out; an exhausted COLE leans back in his chair;
glancing up at the CCTV camera.
Bemused; Detective COLE subsequently leaves the room.

INT. POLICE STATION - OBSERVATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Thoughtfully; Detective SILVA watches the empty
interrogation room through CCTV monitor. COLE joins her.
They exchange frustrated looks.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - LATER - NIGHT
Bewildered; COLE and SILVA stand over the table. Spread
across it is the contents of the police file.
Shuffling papers and photos around; making notes; the two
detectives settle in for a long night.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM - LATER
Frustrated and no further ahead; COLE leans over the table;
aimlessly shuffling papers around. Releasing a sigh, he
leans back glancing at a whiteboard set up at the side.
Drawn on the whiteboard are five sections - titled SUSPECTS
1-5. In each of the first three sections are photos of
JAMES, ALICE AND KATE.
In the forth section is a CCTV photo of THE BARMAN and a
question mark. In the fifth; simply a question mark.
Momentarily giving up, COLE goes to the window; staring out.
Seeing an opportunity; SILVA pockets a photo. Telling COLE
she’s following something up; she leaves hurriedly.

7.
INT. POLICE STATION - CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
Briskly; SILVA walks down the corridor, making her way to
the locker room to collect her things.

INT. POLICE STATION - LOCKER ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
SILVA takes her bag and coat from her locker.
Coat on; she unties her pony tail; checking the mirror.
In the reflection she notices someone walk past in the
corridor. Quickly she gathers her things; going to the door.

INT. POLICE STATION - CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUS
After checking the corridor is clear; SILVA hastily heads

INT. POLICE STATION - CORRIDOR - CONTINUOUSAs she reaches her car; SILVA produces the stolen photo;
sighing with relief as she double checks it.
Now we see that the photo is a CCTV image from the party. It
shows a woman in distinctive clothing; but the face is
unrecognizable.
Placing the photo in her handbag; the detective slides into
her car before driving away.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - CONTINUOUS
Tired; COLE leans back; glancing up at the staff photos on
the wall.
Hearing the door as he places his phone on the table, COLE
turns. Walking in is the BARMAN.

INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM - MOMENTS LATER
Sitting on opposite sides of the table; COLE listens
carefully as the BARMAN tells the real version of events.

FLASHBACK TO:
8.
EXT. THE BALCONY - THE PREVIOUS NIGHT
The BARMAN sweeps up a broken glass. Looking up; a few feet
away; he notices THE MISSING SUSPECT and ALICE holding
hands.
Moments later THE DECEASED walks onto the balcony.
ALICE and THE MISSING SUSPECT suddenly break apart;
shuffling guiltily.
A look of shocked realization appears on DECEASED’S face.
THE DECEASED begins to shout at them as an argument ensues.
Now a little uncomfortable; the BARMAN finishes his work
quickly before he is noticed; going back inside.

INT. THE PARTY - LATER
A drink is made. The BARMAN slides it forwards to THE
MISSING SUSPECT. The party is in full swing.
THE MISSING SUSPECT hands him the money with one hand; the
other covering the glass.
Taking the money; the BARMAN notices something at the bottom
of the glass; making the drink fizz.
JAMES steps up to the bar; ordering a drink.
JAMES glances back at THE DECEASED.
While he is turned THE MISSING SUSPECT switches the drinks.
Taking her handbag and drink; the MISSING SUSPECT leaves. As
she lifts the handbag a small container drops onto the bar.
Cleaning the bar; and without her seeing; the BARMAN picks
it up. On a closer look; we see that it’s a pill container.
The BARMAN quickly puts the container away.
As JAMES returns to THE DECEASED; now chatting to a new
friend; handing THE DECEASED the switched drink.
Becoming drowsy; THE DECEASED leaves JAMES talking to the
new friend. ALICE and KATE join them.

9.
EXT. THE BEACH - A SHORT WHILE LATER
THE MISSING SUSPECT and THE DECEASED walk along. Supported
by THE MISSING SUSPECT; THE DECEASED appears frail and
disorientated.

EXT. PATH - CONTINUOUS
The path leading from the staff entrance to the beach.
Finishing his shift; the BARMAN walks towards the beach.
Reaching into his pocket; he takes out the container from
the bar; a grave expression on his face.
EXT. THE BEACH - CONTINUOUS
Walking onto and along the beach; the BARMAN heads home.
Glancing ahead he notices two hooded figures.
His mind on other things; he takes a turning towards his
home; but stops; hearing a cry for help.
He glances ahead again; seeing the pair arguing. One seems
to be grabbing the other; as they attempt to break free.
As the BARMAN moves closer he sees that one is now on top of
the other; strangling them.
As he gets closer still; he sees that the attacker has won;
as the victim’s body falls; limp, and lifeless.
Hearing something; the attacker turns suddenly. Concealed by
the darkness; the BARMAN hides.
As the attacker turns her hood falls, her jacket opening;
revealing a t-shirt;distinctive in color ans style.
The BARMAN tries to remember where he has seen it before.
HE REMEMBERS- THE MISSING SUSPECT - AT THE BAR!
Nothing he can do; the BARMAN retreats.
BACK TO PRESENT:
10.
INT. POLICE STATION - INTERROGATION ROOM
COLE is now stood at the board as he listens; fixated on the
question mark in the fifth section.
Still telling the story; the BARMAN stops; noticing the
photo of COLE and SILVA the wall. He picks it up.
COLE turns - "what?". The BARMAN looks up; confused.
INT. POLICE STATION - THE FOLLOWING MORNING
Whistling nonchalantly to herself; SILVA steps in.
She freezes; caught in the headlights. COLE glares in
disappointment; surrounded by colleagues and the BARMAN.
Panicked; SILVA eyes dart from COLE to the pill container on
the desk.
The BARMAN nods; gesturing - "THAT’S HER!"
FLASHBACK TO:
INT./EXT. - FLASHBACK SEQUENCE
A series of or singular flashback(s)revealing THE MISSING
SUSPECT & DETECTIVE SILVA as the same person.
EXT. BEACH - NIGHT OF THE PARTY
We see events from THE DECEASED’S point of view.
We walk along the beach; supported by SILVA.
We struggle a little as SILVA attacks us; shouting.
We fall to the ground as SILVA begins to strangle us.
FADE TO BLACK.
END CREDITS.
